The first iPhone had only one camera, without a front camera or additional modules. The same applies to the iPhone 3G and iPhone 3GS models, where the priority was speed and availability of applications, not photographic capabilities. The cameras of these models had the following characteristics:

  • iPhone - one camera 2 MP, f/2.8
  • iPhone 3G - one camera 2 MP, f/2.8
  • iPhone 3GS - one camera 3 MP, f/2.8

While other manufacturers like Nokia offered better cameras, photos from the first iPhones could only be displayed on the smartphone's screen, as they were not suitable for printing.
