First, let's define what we mean by everyday tasks. My use case looks like this:

  • 2-3 calls for 10-15 minutes via a mobile operator
  • About 200 notifications in Telegram
  • Approximately 100 messages sent in Telegram
  • Multiple incoming and outgoing messages in WhatsApp
  • Listening to music or audiobooks - 1.5-2 hours via wireless headphones

Of course, each scenario may be different, but this will give you a rough idea of how well an older iPhone holds its charge. I should also note that my iPhone XR is running a beta version of iOS. I didn’t notice any significant battery drain during my testing, although beta versions are usually less stable.

If I continued using the iPhone in standard mode, I would get 3-3.5 hours of active screen time.

At 11:08, I disconnected the smartphone from the charger with a charge level of 90% and started using it. I spend most of my time at the computer, answering messages in messengers from it, although notifications come to the iPhone. After listening to music and going to the store, where I used payment, in the evening I left the phone with a charge of 67% and did not connect it to the charger. Overnight, the charge level dropped to 33% after installing iOS 17.4.

Before leaving the smartphone overnight, the usage time with the screen on was 1.5 hours and another 30 minutes in the background. If you continue to use the device in the same mode, you can expect 3-3.5 hours of active screen and another hour and a half of background activity. In this case, a lot depends on the brightness of the display. And all this on the battery capacity of 79%.

When should you change your iPhone battery?

Apple recommends changing the battery when its capacity drops below 80%. This usually happens after 2-2.5 years. As you can see, even almost 5 years after purchase, the smartphone can work fine. Of course, it can't compare with new ones iPhone 15 Pro Max repair or iPhone 15 Plus repair, but its performance is quite decent. If you constantly check the battery capacity, it's time to stop doing it.

Battery capacity may decrease differently for different users: for some it lasts a long time, for others it decreases evenly. But the fact remains: Apple made it so that users worry about autonomy and visit service centers more often. Focus on your feelings: if the charge used to last the whole day, and now only until lunch, then it’s time to change the battery.
